sweetie pie
   A variant of ‘sweetheart’, used by American speakers rather more than by British speakers. ‘Sweetie pie, how long is it since you’ve touched the piano?’ a husband asks in Gideon Planish, by Sinclair Lewis. It is used by a wife to her husband in The Philanderer, by Stanley Kauffman, and in Eustace Chisholm and the Works, by James Purdy, it is a woman who says to her lover: ‘All you got to do, sweety pie, is hold my little hand on the way there.’ ‘My sweetie pie’ occurs in Opening Night, by Ngaio Marsh, addressed to an actress by a playwright.
